People are often surprised by this because chiropractic care is so strongly associated with back pain, and the thought that a child would need care does not make sense. However, many parents are seeking alternative approaches to health that do not include drugs as the first line of defense, chiropractic care is a non-invasive and safe option.
Why would a baby need chiropractic care? Birth, even the most natural vaginal births are still traumatic as a baby passes through the birth canal. If any interventions are used or labor is prolonged unknown forces are placed on an undeveloped spine, specifically affecting the upper cervical segments and shoulder complex resulting in vertebral subluxation that if left untreated may play a role in some of the common complaints of infancy: latching issues, digestion, colic, ear infections, constipation, etc.
The nervous system controls all processes in our body, checking for spinal subluxation (interference to the nervous system) in infants and children is especially important as their nervous systems are immature and developing rapidly. Adjustments of babies and children are very gentle and are adapted to their specific anatomy and size. It is very different than when an adult is adjusted, many times a baby will sleep right through it.
If your child is not symptomatic, having their spine checked as they reach new milestones is a good guide to seeking care and prevention of manifesting symptoms later on. Think of how many times your kids have landed on their bottoms or bumped their heads. These may seem like benign occurrences but they can attribute to misalignments of their spine and hinder the optimal function of their nervous system and overall development.
